Junior Firefighter Program |

|
|
The Grifton Junior Fire Program originally started in the early 90's, mainly consisting of firefighters' children. The Juniors assisted in department fund-raisers and learned about the fire apparatus and station. Years later, the Junior Fire Program expanded and started taking members from the public, and in 2004 joined the Explorer Program which is offered by the Boy Scouts of America, and is a part of Learning for Life's Career Education Program for young boys and girls ages 14 to 18 years old. The Juniors now attend all fire department meetings, trainings, fund-raisers, schools/classes, and are allowed on fire scenes (no Junior is allowed to do any interior fire-fighting). Only Juniors age 16 and older that have completed Rookie School can do any exterior firefighting. Also, only Juniors age 16 and older can attend classes away from the station, and that are affiliated with Pitt Community Colllege. The Community College also offers recruit classes known as "Rookie School". Once a Junior turns 16 and starts Rookie School, they are issued turn-out gear and a pager, and as long as they are attending or have completed Rookie School, they keep their gear. The rookie school program is a required program for all firefighters in the fire service, and when Juniors complete this at an early age, they are ready for the regular fire department when they turn 18 years old. All applicants for regular membership, including Juniors, must be voted into membership by regular department members. This is an excellent program...the Juniors provide a great deal of support for the department, and they gain knowledge about the fire service that they can put to use to become great firefighters, either serving their communities as volunteers, and/or as career firefighters with a paid department.
